A charming and historically important Rolex Datejust 36mm “Ovettone”, reference 6305, dating to 1956 and bearing serial number 146XXX. The watch comes directly from the family of its original owner, providing excellent and highly desirable provenance. The substantial case is in excellent overall condition, having been polished in the past while retaining its impressive thickness and attractive proportions. It shows only light signs of wear from use, while the reference and serial numbers between the lugs remain crisp and well defined. The highlight of this example is its original Swiss-only radium dial, preserved in excellent overall condition. Most of the original luminous plots have naturally lost part of their mass over the decades, an honest characteristic of a dial that has remained original. The original hands are still present. The watch features the desirable roulette date disc, with alternating red and black numerals, characteristic of early Datejust examples. The movement has been freshly serviced by our watchmaker and is running perfectly. The watch is fitted with a Molequin leather strap and a generic ardillon buckle. Combining its substantial early Datejust case, original Swiss-only radium dial, roulette date disc, freshly serviced movement, and provenance directly from the family of the original owner, this reference 6305 “Ovettone” represents a particularly attractive and honest example of Rolex's early Datejust production.
