The present A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 reference 101.039, executed in 18K white gold, is one of the manufacture’s most iconic creations. Offered as a full set, this example is fitted with the elegant silver dial and is believed to date from 2013. The warranty papers are dealer stamped but undated, having originally been sold in Saudi Arabia. Introduced in 1994, the Lange 1 became the watch that symbolized the rebirth of A. Lange & Söhne following the reunification of Germany. Its asymmetric dial layout, oversized date inspired by the famous clock of the Dresden Semper Opera House, and beautifully finished in-house movement have made it one of the defining dress watches of modern haute horlogerie. The 38.5 mm white-gold case appears to have been polished in the past and is today preserved in excellent overall condition, showing only light signs of wear. The watch is fitted with a black alligator leather strap in excellent condition and its original white-gold ardillon buckle. Powering the watch is the in-house manual-winding calibre L901.0, featuring the manufacture's signature three-quarter German silver plate, hand-engraved balance cock, screwed gold chatons, and a 72-hour power reserve. Visible through the sapphire caseback, the movement is widely regarded as one of the finest manually wound calibres of the modern era. While no service history accompanies the watch, it is in perfect working condition at the time of cataloguing.
